Jesus Gutiérrez is my uncle.

Shortly after securing the New Design Center space (that we have come to love so much here in south Fayetteville) in the fall of 2005, I traveled to El Paso, Texas where most of my extended family resides. During that trip Jesus, "Chuy," shared some photographs that he had taken during a recent trip to Mexico.

The images struck me because they spoke about journey. Like all of us, my uncle has experienced a life journey that continues to mold him into the uncle I know today. Battling dependencies on drugs and alcohol have been among his challenges.

I believe that through his continued photographic work he will discover new directions that will spark his creative identity and develop his growth as an artist.
